Of grit.

A tale filled with determination and sacrifice that showcases the generosity and perseverance of the American spirit.

And yes… it even displays God’s providence working through imperfect people to accomplish His purposes.

Those are stories worth telling.

They’re worth studying.

They’re worth wrestling with.

And they’re worth passing on to the next generation.

For that reason, and so many others, it’s important to me that our high school American history curriculum carries the weight of the whole story.

Not just the easy parts.

Not just the difficult parts.

The whole story.

Thankfully, after what felt like months of waiting, the curriculum I’d been waiting for finally arrived.

What Is One Nation Under God?

One Nation Under God: Exploring the Melting Pot of American History is a full-year, one-credit high school American history course. It was written by author Angela O’Dell and is published by Master Books.

It is designed for students in grades 9–12 and takes them on a chronological journey that starts well before America came to be and weaves all the way through the modern era (side note: it’s still painful to see items from my childhood on the pages of a history book 😅).

Oh, and as the name implies, One Nation Under God (ONUG) does this all through the lens of a biblical worldview.

If you’ve used Angela O’Dell’s America’s Story series with your younger children, you already know what she brings to the table. The same warmth, the same storytelling depth, and the same faith-anchored approach are woven into the pages of ONUG. This time, it’s leveled up for your high schooler.

Why We Love the Master Books Family of Programs

Here’s the thing about One Nation Under God that makes it extra special for our family: this isn’t our first experience with Angela O’Dell or her collection of homeschool resources.

Years ago, my son and I spent three years working through America’s Story Vol. 1–3, also by Angela O’Dell and published by Master Books.

And when I say we loved them, I mean it. We truly treasured our time together, lingering over the story of America and the characters that shaped her as we were transported back in time, learning history in a new way. An enjoyable way. One that made history come alive.

I still remember learning about Captain John Paul Jones and his refusal to surrender to the British. His reply to the British Captain, “I have not yet begun to fight!” was one my son and I truly enjoyed. We still remember it to this day!

So naturally, I scoured ONUG and happily found the account of the tenacious captain on page 109.

As newer homeschoolers still trying to find our way, America’s Story helped us cover American history from early exploration all the way through the twentieth century, and honestly? It was one of the sweetest seasons of our homeschool. A season that, looking back, was a turning point for us… and America’s Story was a big part of that.

So when it came time to tackle high school American history, there was no question in my mind what we were reaching for.

Coming back to the American story through One Nation Under God, through older eyes, with more context, more nuance, and a more mature faith, has been one of those homeschool experiences I’ll treasure.

My son remembers things from America’s Story and makes connections now that he couldn’t have made at eight years old. It’s been so much fun to return and learn together through a more mature lens.

Beyond the Angela O’Dell connection, we keep coming back to Master Books year after year because they genuinely get homeschool families. And strong feelings about when school should start in the morning… But I digress.)

Both my teen and I appreciate that he can use this program independently. It doesn’t require me to hover, prep complicated lessons, or teach him directly. He picks it up, he knows what to do, and he does it. That’s a win in my book.

However, it is a program you can use family-style! If you want to read and learn together, you absolutely can!

Just, if you have younger children or sensitive learners, heed the warnings that are expertly placed before some of the more gruesome lessons.

And for anyone who used Angela O’Dell’s earlier US history program with older children as we did, One Nation Under God is a meaningful upgrade. Everything is sharper, richer, and more fully developed. It’s clearly the result of years of listening to homeschool families and refining the vision.

What Does One Nation Under God from Master Books Cover?

In short… a lot.

When I say that One Nation Under God starts at the beginning, I’m not joking. Lesson 1 begins with tracing our roots and a fabulous explanation to the student about why studying history is important.

It begins at the beginning, with Creation, the fall, the Flood, and a brief overview of Old Testament History.

From there, the course moves chronologically through the defining chapters of history, leading up to the pre-colonial era and the first settlements on a land already inhabited.

Then, it slows down.

One Nation Under God walks the learner through the history of this country, sharing firsthand accounts, historical data, and the tales that made America what she is today.

Throughout the nine units, the student will cover:

• The Road to Exploration and Colonization
• Revolution and Independence
• Becoming One Nation
• America Grows and Changes
• The American Civil War
• Growing America
• America and the World Wars
• Postwar American Culture
• Entering the Twenty-First Century

What I love is that this course doesn’t shy away from the hard parts of our history. Slavery, religious persecution, and the brutal costs of war are all here. They are addressed honestly and with biblical grounding.

Much of this simply goes back to the author, Angela O’Dell. She has always understood that you can’t teach the full story of America by skipping the uncomfortable chapters.

However, she also understands that acknowledging hard history is not the same as teaching your student to despise their country.

Throughout One Nation Under God, the story of America is told as exactly what it is – a story of deeply imperfect people, guided by Providence, who showed up with grit, determination, and an often-surprising generosity of spirit.

By the end of the book, your student will finish this course knowing the hard parts of American history and loving the story, even if they don’t always love what was done.

That’s not an easy thing to pull off, but I believe that Angela O’Dell does it beautifully.

A Textbook That Reads Like a Story

One of my favorite things about One Nation Under God truly is the textbook itself.

It’s not filled with dry data and endless points of memorization.

Rather, it’s filled with the rich wonder of the American story. It reads less like a textbook and more like a storybook. Angela writes as though she’s sitting across from your student, bringing history to life.

This is the kind of textbook where you flip it open to preview a lesson and end up reading three pages because it’s genuinely engaging. I’ve seen that happen with my teen, too. The reading doesn’t feel like a chore, which is saying something at the high school level.

The textbook also includes some beloved tales I didn’t expect to find in a high school level history curriculum, including the story of Johnny Appleseed, which is more often tucked away in elementary history books. It’s a wonderful choice. These are the stories that make American history feel human, which is what history should do.

Of course, history does include some important dates, so each unit opens with a historical timeline. This helps the student place the new unit in context and provides an overview of what’s to come.

Full-color images, maps, and charts add visual learning throughout, and dedicated “Melting Pot” features explore the diversity that makes America’s story so rich.

One of our favorite features is the In Their Own Words section. Throughout the course, students read original letters, speeches, and historical documents rather than simply reading someone else’s summary. Those primary sources make history feel far more personal and relevant as students hear directly from the people who lived it.

What’s Inside the Teacher Guide

The Teacher Guide is what makes this program genuinely work for busy homeschool moms and their independent high school students

It’s designed to be open-and-go with minimal prep work required on your end. Each week includes a clear, day-by-day schedule, and the structured lessons guide students through:

• Vocabulary and glossary work
• Reading comprehension (short answer, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, and multiple choice)
• Investigative-style critical thinking questions
• Writing and essay prompts
• Map work and visual analysis

Is Master Books’ One Nation Under God Truly an Independent American History Program?

Yes, and that actually matters more than you might think.

When you’re homeschooling a high schooler, the ability to work independently is huge. High school is a time to transition your child from constantly needing your direction to looking to you for guidance in the big things.

It’s a time when you transition from director of their days to guide, coach, and even mentor (I know. It’s hard to hear… but trust me. I’m on teen #3 and I know just how important this transition is for your future young adults.)

My teen juggles schoolwork alongside his small business, friends, hobbies, and other responsibilities. He needs a curriculum that doesn’t require me to sit next to him and explain every lesson, a program that allows him to take the reins. One Nation Under God is exactly that kind of program.

The structured daily plan, clear instructions, and accessible reading level all support a student who can manage their own learning. I check in regularly, and he knows I am available for questions, clarification, and help where needed, but he doesn’t need me to teach it.

And as much as part of me misses teaching history at the table, that’s not the goal at this stage.

This is the piece that matters most to our family, and it’s woven throughout every lesson in One Nation Under God.

We don’t just want our teen to know the dates and the battles. We want him to understand why history matters, how God’s providence has worked throughout the story of our nation, and how to think about the present through the lens of the past.

This program does that beautifully.

It includes Scripture-based questions and biblical reflection in every unit. Students are asked to grapple with how faith, morality, and worldview shaped the decisions of real historical figures, and what that means for their own lives today. The integration feels natural, not forced. It’s the difference between a curriculum that mentions God in a footnote and one that is genuinely designed with faith at its foundation.

Angela has shared that she wrote this curriculum for today’s “reset generation” of homeschoolers, helping students understand not only what happened in America’s past but also where they fit within that continuing story. After working through this Christian American history curriculum ourselves, I can honestly say I think that purpose shines through on nearly every page.
