What Is a Unit Study (and Why Is It Perfect for Earth Day)?

If you’re new to homeschooling, or just new to unit studies, here’s the quick version: a unit study takes one central theme and weaves multiple subjects through it.

For Earth Day, that might look like:

• Reading books about nature and animals (language arts)
• Doing a recycling sort activity (science + critical thinking)
• Writing a letter to the Earth (writing, penmanship, + spelling)
• Going on a backyard nature walk and sketching what you find (science, physical education, + art)

It’s a low-prep, high-engagement way to teach, and kids rarely even realize they’re covering multiple subjects at once. Win-win!

Earth Day Book List for K-2

Every great unit study starts with great books (just like most great homeschool lessons IMHO!). Here are some favorite read-alouds that spark conversation and curiosity about our planet:

• The Lorax by Dr. Seuss — a timeless classic about speaking up for the environment
• What a Waste by Jess French — a colorful, fact-packed look at pollution and solutions
• Hey, Water! by Antoinette Portis — perfect for little ones learning about the water cycle

Tip: Read one book per day if you’re doing a week-long unit study, then connect it to an activity below! Come Friday, either re-read or discuss your favorite book, or use this as a chance to visit your local library.

Animals & Habitats Activities

Young learners are naturally drawn to animals, which makes habitat study a perfect Earth Day focus. Here are some simple activities that kids love!

Habitat Matching

Print or draw pictures of animals and their habitats (forest, ocean, desert, grassland) and have your child match each animal to its home. Great for sorting skills and vocabulary building!

“If I Were an Animal” Writing Prompt

Ask your child: If you could be any animal on Earth, what would you be and why? What would your home look like? What would you eat?

Head outside with a magnifying glass and a simple tally sheet. Count how many different types of insects, birds, or plants you can find. You might be surprised what’s living right in your own backyard.

Recycling & Earth Care Activities

Teaching kids about recycling doesn’t have to be complicated… it just has to be hands-on!

The Recycle Sort

Gather a bag of clean recyclables (plastic bottles, cardboard, tin cans, paper) and set up three bins labeled: Trash, Recycle, and Compost. Let your child sort! Discuss why each item goes where it does.

Earth Day Pledge

Have your child make a simple pledge about one thing they’ll do to help the Earth this year. Write it out, decorate it, and hang it somewhere visible. A printable version of this is in the free pack!

Upcycled Art

Turn cardboard tubes, egg cartons, or scrap paper into a piece of art. Bonus: talk about how reusing materials is even better than recycling!

Nature & Outdoor Activities

If there’s one thing kids need, it’s more time outside. Here are some simple ways to turn your outdoor time into Earth Day learning:

• Nature Scavenger Hunt — look for specific leaves, rocks, birds, or bugs
• Plant a Seed — even a small herb in a cup teaches the life cycle beautifully
• Litter Pick-Up Walk — take a bag on your next neighborhood walk and pick up any litter you see
• Cloud Journaling — lie in the grass and draw the clouds. Simple, peaceful, and scientific!
• Mud Kitchen Play — yes, getting dirty counts as nature study for little ones 🌱
