After months of homeschooling, and possibly overcoming the February slump, spring is right around the corner and ready to welcome us with all of its promises.

Longer days, warmer weather, and the opportunity to open the windows and get outside are all welcoming sights after a long winter – especially if you live in a cold-weather climate like we do.

Yet the change outside is just what our homeschool needs as spring arrives and encourages us to change ourselves as well.

Thinking Outside The Box

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not always good at thinking outside of the box when it comes to homeschooling. I’m more of a textbook and worksheet kind of person.

My kids, however, are not. They love arts and crafts and projects and all kinds of things that take us away from the textbooks and into their imaginations.

Thankfully, while I am not great at this, I am pretty good at navigating the internet and finding activities that are more fun and less drudgery for them to work on.

However, the internet also does a great job of overwhelming you. Giving you too many options. So here I am going to share with you a few of these ideas I have found just in time for Spring!

We are going to look at everything from the weather and the seasons to nature and journaling, to help you breathe some new life into your homeschool this spring.

And to help you seize the opportunity that is a new season. This an opportunity for homeschool families to mix things up and think outside the box, utilizing nature and natural studies to breathe fresh air and new inspiration into your homeschool routine.

Spring Resources for Homeschooling

One of the things about living in the Northeast is that our winters are long. Snow can start as early as October and drag on until March and even April (I’ve even seen snow in May up here in Maine!). Spending months surrounded by cold and snow means that when Spring finally hits we are all ready for the warmth, sunshine, and longer days.

Winter homeschooling tends to involve a lot of bookwork and focusing on the technical side of homeschooling.

Oh, and P.E. Lots of it in the form of shoveling snow. 😉

It’s not that we spend all winter cooped up. We are outside whether we are moving snow, building snowmen, shoveling, or even the occasional walk on a nice day.

Winter homeschooling may be fun, but when Spring rolls around we are all ready for a change and some warmth!

We spend time learning about what is truly the longest season around here with studies on snow, constellations, and the many holidays that fall while snow is on the ground.

There are so many ways for us to homeschool in the snowwe just have to keep warm enough! 😉

But when Spring finally arrives… we are more than ready.

Ready for the longer and warmer days, the return of green grass, and opening windows to allow the fresh air inside.

We are excited to try Spring STEM Activities, tackle an Earth Day Craft, or even decorate our home with a variety of St. Patrick’s Day crafts!

Spring means it’s finally time to work on butterfly learning packets or make tissue paper flowers as we enjoy warmer days filled with sunshine and smiles and oodles of spring poems.

And ready to take advantage of seasonal learning that only comes with the arrival of Spring.

So with that, I want to share with you these fantastic resources for shaking things up this Spring as we all embark on the last leg of another homeschool year. Many of these are easy outdoor activities for kids that you are going to love adding to your homeschool!

Spring Resource #1: Backyard Birds Study

Birds are always a sure sign of spring. Whether you live where the birds are migrating away from or migrating to, most backyards offer ample opportunity to see and hear these amazing creatures.

This free lapbook from Homeschool Share allows you to create a notebook of all that you see. Dive deeper by researching the specific birds, their migration patterns, and habits, and even track how many you see of each type of bird.

Dig in a little deeper by adding bird books to help you study, explore, and find out all about these diverse, curious, and beautiful winged creatures.

Spring Homeschool Resource #2: Spring Flowers

Spring is always a great time for learning about flowers. Perennials, annuals, and even just the local wildflowers are all a sure sign that spring is around the corner.

Why not develop your child’s curiosity and expand your homeschooler’s understanding of them with this Spring Flowers Unit Study from Year Round Homeschooling? Filled with facts, a video, and plenty of additional resources to continue learning, this unit study could keep you busy for a while.

Spring Homeschool Resource #3: Frogs

Not normally associated with spring, frogs are a great study this time of year. The Multitasking Mom has a great Frog Lifecycle Color and Copywork Printable perfect for your early elementary study.

A couple of years ago, my then pre-k kiddo and I completed one of her frog printables and it was great. We paired this printable with some books from our local library and spend a couple of weeks covering frogs in our house. This one is a little different, so I think I’m going to grab a copy myself and see what he remembers.

Plus, I can work on this with my kindergartener too! Combining classes for the win!

Spring Homeschool Resource #4: Weather

April showers bring May flowers as the saying goes, but where does the rain come from? How are clouds formed? And what is lightning?

Answers to these questions and more can be found at Kids Discover Online. This great resource will educate and entertain your homeschooler while you learn all about changing weather patterns.

My second grader and I spent a lot of time on this site last fall studying hurricanes and I know your homeschool will enjoy these weather-related topics as well!

Spring Homeschool Resource #5: The Equinox

Go beyond just learning about the weather and spend some time learning about the seasons with this Equinox Study Unit from DIY Homeschooler. Includes information for all the seasons and not just spring, so keep this one handy for later in the year as well.

Spring Homeschool Resource #6: St. Patrick’s Day

This free printable packet from Happy and Blessed Home is just the thing for your pre-k or kindergartener. Filled with coloring pages, cutting practice, counting, and more, this printable will get your little one excited for all the fun that is St. Patrick’s Day while allowing you to sneak in some history and social studies in a low-key way.

Oh, and the WOLFe Pack has some fantastic ways you can have fun on St. Patrick’s Day in your homeschool. You don’t want to miss this!

Spring Homeschool Resource #7: St. Patrick

Go behind the leprechauns, the rainbows, and the pots of gold and spend some time learning about the man we now know as St. Patrick. Who was he? Was he really Irish? And how did his life transform into today’s modern-day celebration? Check out the answers to all these questions and more with History.com.

Thinking Outside of the Box for Spring Homeschooling

Homeschooling often requires that we homeschool moms think outside the box.

While we may want to fill our children’s days with grammar drills, math lessons, and history pages, our kids want and need more than that.

To help you, here is a quick list of additional spring-themed content to consider:

  • Holidays such as April Fool’s Day, Easter, May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day.
  • Topics such as gardening, insects, migration, and the seasons.
  • Character lessons such as religion, forgiveness, and doing your best.
  • Seasonal crafts including May baskets and kites made from this kite template.
