Exploring A New Homeschool Elementary Math Curriculum From Apologia

Apologia is here with a brand new homeschool elementary math curriculum and our homeschool could not be more excited to share what it has to offer!

For years, we have gone to Apologia for one subject – science. In fact, they have been our go-to science vendor for years at each and every grade level. Why we never ventured out other subjects, I really can’t say.

But, when I learned that Apologia was branching out into the homeschool elementary math arena, I knew that we needed to start venturing and give Exploring Creation with Mathematics a try.

Wait, Apologia Math?!

Yes, Apologia math! Titled after the Young Explorer’s science series, Exploring Creation with Mathematics is an elementary-level math program with 3 levels currently available (more are on the way!).

Each level is composed of 2 parts – the spiral-bound student text and the teacher guide with the answer key. The teacher guide also contains a day-by-day lesson plan to help you see what lessons are coming up, what skills are going to be learned, and when projects are going to be completed.

5 Key Components of Apologia’s Homeschool Elementary Math Curriculum

As Apologia’s homeschool elementary math curriculum was created by a former homeschool student, former math teacher, and 2nd generation homeschooler, it’s no surprise that the entire program was created with a few key components in mind.

Five, to be exact.

These 5 items are ones that you will find throughout the program and are the foundation with which this elementary math curriculum was built upon.

1. Fun – Filled with color photos, hands-on activities, and engaging projects, Exploring Creation with Mathematics aims to show children just how fun math truly can be!
2. Carefully Crafted Conceptual Content – While Apologia aims to challenge your children and build up their math skills, they do so following a very specific path that is orderly and gradual.
3. Skills Practice – Elementary math is all about learning the basic skills and Apologia made sure to include plenty of repetition to aid in both mastery of skill but also memorization of key facts.
4. Ease of Use – Everything Apologia does is all about being easy to use for both students and parents, and the same is true of their homeschool elementary math curriculum as well.
5. Christian Connections – Math is a part of Creation, and studying it should always point to the Creator.

What Is Covered In Apologia’s Elementary Math Program?

As this is a brand new program, I do love that Apologia is sharing exactly what is covered in each level of their homeschool elementary math curriculum. Not only is this super helpful information to have, but it can also help with placing your child at the correct level.

Levels 4-6 will be available at a future date and will be covering place value, multiplication and division, geometry, fractions, decimals, and percents, graphs and data, and more.

My Daughter’s thoughts

She may only be 7, but my daughter is an opinionated one.

At first, she wasn’t too keen on the idea of starting a new math book simply because it was summer vacation.

However, once I told her that we could start with level 2, she was more than ready to see what this mathematics program offered.

By the end of lesson 1, she was hooked and we easily found ourselves working through the first lesson quickly.

Daily she and I gathered her workbook, my teacher guide, and the other supplies needed to work on place value, expanded form, number words, ordinal numbers, and even and odd practice and most of chapter 1.

My Thought’s on Exploring Creation with Mathematics from Apologia

Honestly, I love it… but I will admit that I am biased. We are an Apologia household through and through.

I know, not much to go on, so let’s get specific.

First, the layout.

Apologia’s homeschool math curriculum is laid out in a super organized and easy-to-understand fashion that is perfect for this far-too-busy homeschool mom. I don’t need to spend a ton of time wondering what lesson to do next or what items we might need to complete the day’s work.

Second, the lessons in Exploring Creation with Mathematics are child-friendly, fun, and engaging.

The pages are colorful with large fonts and have just a few problems on each page, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

The activities include more than just paper and pencil, mindlessly completing page after page. Instead, they utilize blocks, fingers, sticks, and more to get the whole body in on the lesson.

Third, all of the built-in repetition that works to build both mastery and confidence the right way.

As a homeschool mom, I am generally pretty laid back when it comes to education, but math is one of those subjects that I am a stickler with simply because I know that Algebra builds on 7th-grade math, 6th-grade math builds on 4th-grade math, and 3rd-grade math builds on 1st-grade math. If the foundation, the early skills of counting, placement, and order, are lacking, then the skills that build on those lessons won’t stick.

I’ve shared this image on Facebook a few times because it resonates with me. As a math person, I enjoy the subject and I am grateful for that.

But I also know that there are others who struggle, even some of my own children.

Yet we have realized that those words are correct.

It’s not that my child hates math, it’s that math is confusing to them. The rules don’t make sense and the step are forgotten as soon as the worksheet is finished.

Yet, when slowed down, and made relevant, math is doable.

Apologia’s homeschool elementary math curriculum makes math doable, relevant, and enjoyable.

And for this homeschool mom, that’s all she needs to know.
