A few months ago I introduced you to Byron’s Games, the makers of Continent Race. My family is still enjoying the fun and simplicity this game brings to both family time and learning geography. So when Byron’s Games asked if I would be interested in reviewing their newest product, Connections, I was pretty confident I’d say yes. Our first interaction with Byron’s Games was a great one, and I had a feeling this one would be too. Created with a desire to bring families together, Connections, looked like a perfect fit for our home. So we set out to review this super fun letter-writing kit for kids.

What’s The Big Deal With Letter Writing?

I know, in this modern world, filled with instant communication, letter writing can seem a bit old fashioned. Rather than shooting off a quick email or instant message, letter writing takes time, thought, and even a bit of patience. Without the ability to simply delete a wrong line or typo, handwritten letters may require a drafting phase while the author compiles their thoughts.

None of this is a bad thing though. As a homeschooler, we work hard to ensure the kids work on both penmanship and handwriting even if they are seldom used. For us, they are vital skills and even though technology has nearly replaced the need for writing letters by hand, technology cannot replace the skills learned or the memories that handwritten letters create.

Nor can they replace the joy or sending or receiving handwritten notes. With Connections, your children can create and send their own personalized letters to friends or family – and learn to wait patiently while their creation is mailed to their recipient.

The Kids Didn’t Need Convincing!

One of the beautiful things about childhood is that mail is still a good thing. Having yet to be drug down life, my kids love the idea of both receiving and sending mail. So when Connections arrived, they were all too happy to check it out.

Included in the Connections Letter-Writing Kit, you will find everything you need to draft 25 letters – paper, envelopes, envelope seal stickers, a stamp with 2 different colored ink pads, and a pen. The pages are exploratory in nature with an airplane, compass, and continents all part of the design. These elements allow your kids to feel like they are truly writing something special as they are so different from plain white lined paper. Measuring 6″ x 8.5″, the stationary pages aren’t too large even for the smallest of hands.

Everything you need to write and send a letter.

The envelopes also have a design element to them, adding to the adventurous feel.

With the rubber stamp, you can add in a fun element stamping “thank you” on the pages – perfect for teaching kids to be grateful for gifts they have received. And with two colors, both pink and blue, my kids were plenty happy with the color options available.

The pen included is a nice, quality pen. Blue ink and super smooth writing ensure everything from unsteady hands to the most fluent caligraphy will transfer exactly as the writer intends. This fine-lined pen is the perfect addition.

And of course, with the envelope seal stickers, kids can mimic the old-fashioned skill of sealing their letters (or, you could sneak in a unit study on wax-seals!).

A Super Fun Stationary Kit For Kids

The Connections Letter Writing Kit For Kids is a super fun kit, and my kids were thrilled to open it up and start working with it.

Unfortunately, when our kit arrived the kids were all sick. I checked out the items, waiting for everyone to feel better so we could begin writing letters.

Finding this time, let me tell you, was not easy as my children decided to bounce from illness to illness over the last several weeks.

We did, however, manage to grab a few opportunities. My 14-year-old was more than happy to try the Connections kit out as she has a natural love of both writing letters and scrapbooking. She was really impressed by the pen, found the stamps to be a really fun element, and loved the design of the pages.

My 9-year-old not only enjoyed the stationary, but also used this as a great opportunity to remind me that I have yet to teach him cursive – something he really wants to learn.

And even though my youngest, who is just 5 and still in the early stages of writing, is slightly under the recommended age of 6+ for this kit, she also loved the fun designs, stickers, and stamp that Connections includes.
