The 3 Things You Need To Start Homeschooling Today

What I truly wished I had known when we began our homeschool journey – how to start homeschooling, save yourself hundreds of dollars, not to mention tons of stress, frustration, anxiety, and tears, and begin a lifestyle with a simple structure focused on relationship, curiosity, and success.

It’s a question I see everywhere, especially this time of year as parents of littles begin thinking about starting their children in pre-k and kinder – What do I need to start homeschooling?

And I get it. These moms are about to embark on an amazing journey and they want to do well. They want to ensure their child is equipped with all the best that homeschooling has to offer.

But what if I told you that starting your homeschool journey was easier than you think? What if I shared with you the simple truth that you don’t need the flashing curriculum bundles, the brand-new folders and crayons, or even a fancy homeschool room?

What if everything you needed to start homeschooling your child, regardless of age, was probably already in your home?

Wait, this sounds too good to be true…

I know it sounds a bit too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Your inner skeptic is probably already wondering why you are even on this post.

But, deep inside, you know you need to know.

I mean, it’s a pretty bold assumption of me to assume that you already have what you need to start homeschooling.

And yet, as a veteran homeschool mom, I do have some things to say about starting your homeschool journey, keeping it simple, and finding your authentic homeschool style. Getting back to the roots of home education like these famous homeschoolers of the past.

So, let’s dig in, my friend, and see what 3 items you need to start homeschooling today and whether or not you already have them (odds are, you do!).

How Can I Be Sure?

Well, after nearly a decade of homeschooling my own children, fresh off the heels of graduating our second homeschooled student, I think it’s safe to say I know a thing or two about homeschooling.

Not all of it, of course… I’m still learning and will continue to as long as we homeschool. I’ll read books on homeschooling, parenting, and educating for at least as long as we are teaching our children at home so I can be sure to give them the best education possible.

But As For Your Homeschool Journey

If you are ready to start your homeschool journey, whether your child is just starting to learn or already enrolled in school and you are feeling the pull to bring them home, let me show you a simple way to start.

A method that is guaranteed to take the pressure off you and your child.

You see, all you honestly need to start your homeschool journey is a library card, a sense of adventure, and some coffee (or your favorite beverage). ๐Ÿ˜Š

It Really Is Simpler Than You Think

Yes, my friend, you can start homeschooling with just a dream and some caffeine (someone should put that on a homeschool shirt!).

I know you are looking for curricula recommendations, must-have resources, and even homeschool reviews, but, as a homeschooling mama of four who has now graduated her second homeschooler, I highly recommend relaxed homeschooling – especially in the younger years – and learning about deschooling if you are transitioning from the public school system.

Why?

So you both can enjoy some time that is filled with awe and wonder, adventure, and interest-based learning that is designed around play and creativity over stuffy old worksheets and math drills. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Time spent with your children, laughing, playing, and giggling.

Perhaps making pancakes for breakfast, letting your child pour, stir, and even flip (even if it’s messy), counting chocolate chips as you add them in.

Afternoons spent walking around and exploring nature, skipping down the road, or jumping rope in the driveway.

Days filled with conversations about the sun and the birds and the bugs and the weather.

Afternoons spent working on fun crafts, hands-on projects, or other seasonal homeschool activities.

Time to color, use play dough, and read bookslots and lots of books.

And before you know it, you’ve not only homeschooled (covering math, science, and language arts in a simple, organic way) but you’ve also built your child up and worked on forming a relationship that you both need.

You easily turned learning into fun homeschool activities and took advantage of a simple, carefree day filled with the rich benefits of tech free days and avoided some of the most common beginner homeschool mistakes.

All while having fun and living life with your children. Not bad for a newbie! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, Starting Homeschool Is Easier Than You Think

Don’t get bogged down, my friend, with shiny recommendations and a perfectly procured curriculum. While these resources are lovely to have, they often overwhelm a new homeschool family.

Instead, start your homeschool journey in a simple way, adding in learning packets, stories, and eventually curriculum as you go and learn. Knowing that there’s plenty of time to create homeschool systems, dive into the plethora of time management tips later, and create custom learning plans (especially for special needs homeschooling).

For now, you can simply grab your library card, your sense of adventure, and some extra coffee, mama, and start your homeschool journey.

  1. This blog is so helpful, I know so many families switching to homeschooling and its so reassuring to see all the “veteran” homeschoolers coming alongside them and helping them realize it’s not as hard as it sounds!

    1. Thank you, Karlee! This article was inspired by a question I answered in a Facebook group where a new homeschooler was stressed about what she may or may not need. Many wonderful moms offered oodles of great answers and offered up curriculum recommendations… and I came in with “a library card, a sense of adventure, and some coffee.” Not because the other moms were wrong, but because I think sometimes we homeschoolers put too many rules and far too many expectations on ourselves.

Anyway, that comment kept me busy as I added to it the idea of natural learning and covering subjects as we go about our days, and moms jumped in saying they wish they had known this before.

So now, it’s out there so other moms can see that homeschooling truly can be started with just 3 simple things. ๐Ÿ™‚
