Learning How To Homeschool Your Kids
So, you’ve made the decision to homeschool. Whatever your reason, whatever your situation, you have decided that the best decision for your family is to begin homeschooling.
And now…?
Now it’s time to start learning how to homeschool your kids, to become a student yourself as much as a teacher, so you can guide your children.
I can still remember making that decision years ago. I can still remember thinking that we were going to do it – we were going to take the responsibility on our shoulders and become a homeschool family.
We had two children enrolled in the local public school but I felt this yearning to make a change.
It started as an idea, a fleeting one at that. One that seemed so large, like an impossible mountain to climb.
Yet, that fleeting feeling never left and slowly I began to research how to start homeschooling. Began reading about a movement that is so much more than an educational decision for millions of families in the US and around the world.
And even though I thought I knew what I was doing… it didn’t take long to learn that knowing how to homeschool is a lifelong adventure.

Fumbling Through The Start
If you are looking for someone to tell you all about their own glorious beginnings… well, this isn’t it.
In fact, it’s the complete opposite.
Our adventure in homeschooling began with me making each and every mistake a new homeschooler could make.
I failed to deschool, even though we transitioned mid-year.
I failed to think about how my children learn, thinking I knew how to best approach homeschooling.
And I completely failed to embrace any sort of homeschool freedom, instead, making our initial homeschool experience nothing more than school at home.
So please know that when I write about how to start your homeschool journey, I am telling you to do not just the opposite of what I did, but to include the essential homeschool elements that I know are key to homeschooling successfully.

But first…
Before I can tell you how to homeschool your child, I need to address the elephant in the room.
I need to tell you what homeschooling is not before I can even begin to tell you what homeschooling is.
Homeschooling is not days sitting at desks completing worksheets and writing Latin.
Homeschooling is not days that are rigid and strict filled with bells and block schedules.
Homeschooling is not days packed with lessons and lectures and learning, and evenings filled with homework.
Unless, of course, you want it to be.

Because homeschooling is a unique approach to education that encompasses a wide variety of methods, techniques, and approaches while keeping in mind unique learning styles, personalities, abilities, and goals.
It’s a customized education that can be exactly what your child needs when your child needs it.
How To Homeschool Your Child
And here we are… the keys to the castle. The one thing you have searched the internet for, combed forums to learn… the answer to the question that is burning inside because while you are dedicated you are also terrified.
Just start.
Two words that are gloriously and unceremoniously anticlimactic.
Just begin.
Start with a book or a field trip.
Add in a documentary or a walk through the woods.
Learn about learning styles.
Sprinkle in some baking.
Solidify your commitment to learning how to homeschool.

Stay up late, watch the sky, and count the stars.
Go grocery shopping.
Read another book… and then watch the movie version.
And know that you are at the start of a glorious adventure that you are writing. One that you and your child will be on together.
Some days will be easier than others.
Some seasons will make you question your decision because yes, homeschooling is amazing and rewarding, but homeschooling can also be hard.
Yet each day will require you to renew your commitment, find your determination, and be firm as you learn how to homeschool each and every day right alongside your children.
