Math. It’s a subject many cringe at – even homeschoolers. This is exactly why I jumped at the chance to review the blended math program from Discover! In our homeschool we love math, but I’m also really keen on helping you make math simple by finding fun, easy-to-use, and good programs for you to choose from.

So, what did we think of Discover! Curriculum? How did this homeschool math program line up? And is it something that might help you as you embark on a new homeschool year? Well, let’s find out!

K-6 Homeschool Curriculum

In our homeschool, we know the importance of laying a good foundation in the early years. The k-6 years are the building blocks for the upper grades and are vital to helping older kids launch into their adult life.

And while we love learning with books, I also know that sometimes a good homeschool curriculum is necessary – especially when it comes to math.

Learning Homeschool Lessons

In the last two years, we have graduated two of our children. This upcoming year is going to be wildly different than anything we’ve experienced. No one will be in high school, my student size has dropped by 50%, and both of my children are looking to be more independent.

With a 4th grader and an 8th grader, they don’t need as much help with their homeschool lessons as they used to. And after watching her older siblings learn on their own, my youngest is ready to take on more responsibility. She sees herself different as she nears her 10th birthday and it’s a bittersweet moment for sure.

As a homeschool parent, my job is not to hold her back but to plan a homeschool year that supports her interests, abilities, and skills, while also allowing her the freedom to try something new.

Oh, and make sure we are always building on that homeschool foundation we started laying years ago.

What Is Discover! Curriculum?

Part of the Endovate Learning Corp., Discover! Curriculum aims to help today’s learners follow their curiosity and discover new things while also helping them become self-sufficient and independent learners. They do this by offering K-6 homeschool curriculum covering math, science, social studies, and Language Arts.

Oh, and they offer all of this as blended learning, meaning your child is mixing both online instruction with workbooks covering multiple learning styles and offering repeated exposure to the same material. Blended learning is a fantastic way to support your children and ensure they do more than learn the material only to complete the lesson. By getting more of the body involved in learning through reading, writing, and listening, you are making learning more impactful.

Using The Discover! Math Curriculum

Blended learning means that with the Discover! Curriculum 4th-grade math set, my daughter would work both online and in a workbook. I love the mix of both options because not only does this allow her to work on math when I am unavailable, it also gives her the opportunity to listen, read, and write. This multi-faceted approach to learning helps solidify the lessons – something that is vital for learning math well.

In 4th-grade math, you will find 10 chapters covering a wide array of concepts including:

  • Place value, addition & subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Perimeter & Area
  • Division
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Measurement
  • Data
  • Points, Lines & Angles
  • Plane & Solid Figures

With two workbooks for your children, online instruction, and an in-depth Instructor Guide for you, homeschool math from Discover! is ready to support both parents and students alike.

Throughout each lesson, your student will go systematically through several stages of learning including

  • Get Ready
  • Read & Do
  • Interactive Practice
  • Continuing the Journey
  • Practices
  • Extension Activity
  • Show What You Know

Throughout each stage, the Discover! Curriculum will guide you and your child with simple, easy-to-follow instructions. Part of the lesson will be completed online while other parts will be done in the workbook – this is blended learning! By combining a mixture of digital and print aspects, Discover! helps students learn in multiple ways activating different areas of the brain, and reinforcing lessons using a multifaceted approach to learning. It’s a fantastic way to work on homeschool lessons!

The final element of the lesson, Show What You Know, can be completed either online or in the workbook allowing your child the opportunity to show what they have learned in the format that works best for them.

My daughter loved being able to bounce back and forth between the workbook and the computer. She’s watched her siblings do a lot over the years and this program helped this rising 4th grader feel a bit more like a big kid.

Get Ready to Discover!

Each chapter in the Discover! Curriculum homeschool math starts with clearly defined objectives and an overview of the lessons in that chapter.

Each lesson begins by sharing what your child will be able to do by the end of the lesson. This is key, in my opinion, to helping you and your child see learning happen and determining whether your child has masted the lesson.

One of my favorite features is the Academic Vocabulary section of the lesson. Right after the objectives, your child will be able to review new terms and see what they mean. There is space to write the page number that the term is used as well.

And for math, this information is vital. You see, part of the confusion that many students have with math, and the cause of many math frustrations and meltdowns is nothing more than confusion over terms, concepts, and what amounts to the language of math. Starting with this gives your child a leg up on the lesson and a quick reference guide if they need a refresher.

It’s simple and it makes learning math just a little easier.
