10 Fun & Easy Summer Science Ideas Your Kids Will Love
Inside: Keep learning fun this summer with these 10 easy and engaging science activities for kids featuring everything from Shark Week lessons to home science camps and astronomy to meteorology. Let’s dive into some fun summer science ideas!
Summer and science might not sound like the perfect pair at first, after all, isnโt summer for sunshine and sprinklers, not microscopes and measuring cups?
But hereโs the thing: science is everywhere, especially in summer! From ocean tides and melting popsicles to buzzing bees and backyard stars, summer is bursting with opportunities to explore, ask questions, spark wonder, and learn whether you are digging into a textbook or a garden plot.
The best part? You donโt need a full curriculum to enjoy summer science… In fact, you may do better without it.
Today, I’m showing you 10 fun and easy ways to keep your kids learning (without it feeling like school)โincluding a few of our family favorites!

Summer Science Ideas Your Kids Will Love!
I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a very sciency homeschooler. It’s just not a subject I enjoy or one I have been able to adapt to our book-loving, curiosity-driven method of homeschooling.
However, my kids have always had a bit of a draw towards science, and thankfully, there are plenty of wonderful science curricula that we have been able to surround ourselves with.
Not to mention, science truly is all around us! Whether it’s a solar eclipse, living in Maine (where we can homeschool in the snow and enjoy seasonal lessons), or even wonderful conversations that allow us to talk about nutrition, the human body, or even the importance of staying active.
Even as a homeschool mom who prefers math, history, and language arts, science, and all that it entails, has a way of creeping outside of the textbooks and into our everyday.
And with these 10 ideas for fun summer science lessons, I have a feeling we both will be sneaking in science lessons all summer long!
Let’s get to it, shall we?
Dive Into Shark Week Science
If youโve got an ocean-lover or a future marine biologist at home, Shark Week is the perfect excuse to go all in on summer science. This annual event, typically held in July, is a great time to study all things ocean.
Need some help? I’ve got you covered with a Sharks Facts Memory Game and the All About Sharks learning packet. Both of these printable homeschool resources contain fun facts, hands-on activities, and more to help bring learning (and science) to life!
Join a Science Summer Camp
Looking for ready-to-go, high-quality science content your kids can do without you having to teach it? Look no further than Journey Homeschool Academyโs Summer Camps.
They offer interactive, video-based science experiences that cover topics like astronomy, biology, and moreโall designed with homeschoolers in mind. My kids have LOVED these camps. The lessons are engaging, the experiments are doable with stuff you already have, and itโs a great way to keep learning going in a fun, low-pressure way.

Make a Solar Oven (and Cook a S’more!)
Harness the power of the sun and teach kids about solar energy by building a DIY solar oven using a pizza box, foil, and plastic wrap. Then, test it out by melting marshmallows and chocolate into gooey perfection. Science has never tasted so sweet!
Observe the Night Sky
Summer nights are made for stargazing. Grab a blanket, head outside, and look for constellations, satellites, and maybe even a meteor or two. Want to go deeper? Use a star map or free sky-watching app to learn about planets and phases of the moon.
Bonus: It doubles as a sneaky way to learn some astronomy!
Grow a Mini Garden (and Track the Science)
Plant a few fast-growing seedsโlike radishes, green beans, or sunflowersโand keep a journal of their growth. Measure, sketch, and observe changes over time. Itโs a great intro to botany or the life cycle of plants, and it works even with just a windowsill and a cup of dirt.
Plus, you can eat, cook, and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
Prefer to grow flowers? Be sure to grab this free Life Cycle of a Flower learning pack!
Create a Backyard Bug Lab
Grab a magnifying glass and head outside to discover whatโs crawling and flying nearby. Set up a simple observation jar (poke air holes!) and let kids study bugs up close before releasing them. Ants, beetles, butterfliesโthereโs no shortage of science waiting in your yard.
Oh, and Backyard Bugs is just one of the fun Summer Camp options from Journey Homeschool Academy!

Mix Up Some Kitchen Chemistry
You donโt need a lab coat to do chemistryโjust a kitchen! Try making a baking soda and vinegar volcano, homemade slime, or edible rock candy. As kids mix, observe, and react (pun intended), theyโll naturally ask questions that lead to real scientific understanding.
If you need ideas, check out my Patriotic Crafts for Kids post for some fun kitchen chemistry ideas!
Make a Rain Gauge
Get crafty and track weather patterns by making your own rain gauge from a plastic bottle. Measure daily rainfall, observe cloud types, and start talking about the water cycleโperfect for sneaking in earth science on rainy days.
Explore Sink or Float (With a Twist)
Add a fun twist to this classic experiment by using summer-themed items: pool toys, seashells, popsicles, or flip-flops. Let kids make predictions, test each item, and then talk about density and buoyancy.
Want to take it further? Try it in salt water and compare the results!
A few years ago, we reviewed Big Bible Science, and this book contained so many fun, hands-on, and engaging science lessons just like this one!
Build a Bird Buffet
Make your own bird feeders using pinecones, peanut butter, and birdseedโor get creative with recycled materials. Hang them up and track which birds visit each day. Add in some field guide research and youโve got a full-on ornithology lesson happening at your kitchen window.
Ready for a Fun Summer of Science?
You donโt need fancy tools or a rigid schedule to keep learning alive this summer. A few good ideas, a sense of curiosity, and a willingness to get a little messy is all it takes.
Add in a trip to the library and a walk to the park, and you’ve got a full day of homeschool learning that is simple, fun, and completely authentic!
Whether you dive into the Shark Week resources, sign up for a Journey Homeschool Academy camp, tackle one of the Patriotic craft for kids, or just try one backyard experiment at a time, remember: learning doesnโt have to stop when the weather heats up. In fact, it might just be the best time to spark new interests and discoveries.
Hereโs to a summer full of sunshine and science!
Happy homeschooling, friend!
