When you are just starting your homeschool journey, it can feel a bit overwhelming with endless options at every turn.

Curriculum catalogs are thicker than your Bible.

Pinterest shows perfectly curated school rooms.

Instagram is filled with endless reels showing perfectly happy homeschool families.

And, of course, there’s the seas of a thousand voices telling you what you “must have” to succeed.

I’ve been there, friend… and let me tell you a secret – you don’t actually need most of it!

So let’s clear the noise and the clutter because today, I’m going to share with you what you really need to start homeschooling, and what you can let go of with a sigh of relief.

What You Really Need to Homeschool

As a prospective homeschooler, it can be easy to get swept away by all the voices out there telling you to buy this product, follow this method, or organize in this way, especially if you want to start homeschooling today!

I know. I was there. Overwhelmed and undersupported. Confused yet determined to start homeschooling.

Only, most of the advice was for those who were already in the thick of it, and I needed the foundation. A guide. A roadmap that held my hand and kept us on the straight and narrow.

Spoiler alert: I didn’t find it, and we muddled through those first few years before we became homeschoolers for life.

Once we got our bearings, I set out to be what I needed. I didn’t want other families to struggle like we did. I didn’t want other moms to wrestle with the same overwhelm I did.

But, enough about me and our journey. Let’s take a look at what you really need to start homeschooling.

1. A Clear Why

Not to scare you, but homeschooling isn’t always easy. There will be days when doubt creeps in and you wonder if you’re cut out for this. There will be days when tears, frustration, and doubt creep in have you wondering if this is right for you.

That’s why having a strong “why” matters.

Your why will keep you grounded when the tears start flowing (theirs and yours). It will help you remember why you chose this path when you’re tempted to throw in the towel.

And it will center you when it feels like too much.

2. An Understanding of the Law

Before you pick up a single workbook, make sure you know what your state requires. Every state has different homeschool laws, and staying compliant gives you peace of mind.

Don’t worry, you don’t need a law degree. There are many great resources to help you understand the governing rules & requirements. My favorite resource is the HSLDA. Another great resource is fellow homeschool moms in your area. They’ve been there, done that, and know how you can, too.

3. A Flexible Plan

Notice I didn’t say a “perfect” plan.

Homeschooling thrives on flexibility. This means observing your family and noting their current routines as you develop homeschool systems that can help you succeed.

That means building systems & routines that serve your family, not chaining yourself to a rigid schedule. You need a plan that helps you stay organized while still allowing room for life’s surprises.

If you’re unsure how to make that work, my Ultimate Home & School Planner is designed to help moms like you create routines and systems that stick.

4. A Willingness to Learn

Here’s the secret: homeschooling isn’t just about your kids learning; you have to learn, too. That may mean reading blogs like this one, joining a few Facebook groups for homeschoolers, or even surrounding yourself with some amazing books for homeschool moms.

Oh, and you will probably have to brush up on a few academic subjects as well. It’s all part of the process and well worth it!

Just remember, you don’t need to know everything before you begin. You just need to be willing to learn as you go.

5. Community

Homeschooling doesn’t mean doing life alone. Whether it’s a local co-op, a sports program, or simply connecting with other homeschool moms online, community keeps you encouraged and supported.

What You Don’t Need To Start Homeschooling

One of the biggest myths about homeschooling is that you need to have it all before you even begin. Friend, that’s simply not true. Let’s clear a few things off your shoulders so you can start homeschooling!

1. A Perfect Homeschool Space

You do not need a Pinterest-worthy homeschool room with matching furniture, color-coded bins, and a giant chalkboard wall. If you have it, great! And if not, don’t let it hold you back.

Homeschooling happens perfectly fine at a kitchen table, on the couch, or under the shade of a tree. You can store your books & supplies in a cupboard, on a bookshelf, or even under the couch.

Your children are going to learn because of your commitment to homeschooling, not because of a fancy room.

We’ve never had a homeschool room, friend, and I can assure you, it’s all worked out.

2. A Pricey Curriculum

The homeschooling world is full of glossy catalogs and all-in-one packages that promise success if you just buy this set and all the extras.

Maybe?

But you know what else is true? You can homeschool on a shoestring budget. You can utilize your library, the internet, freebies & inexpensive printable learning packets, and even used curricula.

You can shop sales, swap with other families, and even reuse programs year after year.

3. The Weight of Other People’s Opinions

Everyone seems to have an opinion about homeschooling: the neighbor who thinks you’re ruining your kids’ social life, the relative who questions whether you’re “qualified,” or even the well-meaning friend who just doesn’t understand.

Here’s the truth, friend – you don’t need their approval. You were called to homeschool your children, and you are the one equipped to make the best decisions for your family.

4. A Public-School-at-Home Mindset

New homeschoolers often feel pressure to mimic the classroom… desks in rows, bells, worksheets for every subject (trust me, I did it, and it was bad!)

Homeschooling is about freedom and creating a lifestyle of learning. Duplicating the public school won’t make that happen.

So, let go of the idea that your day has to look like “school.” Instead, lean into the flexibility and joy that homeschooling brings.
