Whether state history is a requirement of your state, or you simply want to immerse your child in the history of where they call home, studying state history can be a fun and fascinating experience.
But where to start? How to dig in? And how long should you devote to learning about the history of the place you call home?

Sonlight Unit Studies
We have been learning with Sonlight Unit Studies this spring and the experience has been wonderful.
Unit studies are a great way to infuse your homeschool with something new and learn without the traditional boxes of subject-based learning.
With a unit study, you have the opportunity to cross subject lines and study history, science, math, writing, and the arts all at the same time thanks to one topic.
Earlier this spring we transitioned out of our February slump with the Sonlight Butterfly Unit Study. This was our first experience with a Sonlight Unit Study and it was a great one.
So when it was time to begin the 50 States Unit Study from Sonlight, we were excited!
Digging Into the Sonlight 50 States Unit Study
Inside our Sonlight 50 States Unit Study, we found everything we needed to get started to dig into the history of our home state.
While many states require state history in the upper elementary grades, ours requires it during either middle or high school – perfect for my 8th grader!
The 50 States Unit Study contained just two elements – a beautifully illustrated and detailed book covering all 50 states and an instructor’s guide with directions and plenty of pages to complete the unit study.
Studying State History with Sonlight
I’d love to say we started learning state history for our home state right away – but that would not be true. 😉

Before we even dug into state history for us, we perused the beautiful 50 States book searching out the states our family loves to study.
We jumped around learning all about Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, and several other states.
We marveled at the illustrations on each page and learned new facts along with interesting tidbits.
And we began learning even before we started the Sonlight 50 States Unit Study.
Using Sonlights 50 States Unit Study
With our curiosity piqued my son and I began working through the state history unit study from Sonlight.
The instructor’s guide easily walked us through each week’s activity. It was perfect! No guessing and no wondering what to do next.
Just 36 weeks of lessons laid out step-by-step that will end with a beautiful notebooking-style state history project that includes art projects, map work, timeline activities, and more!
State History As Part of Your Homeschool
Designed to be used once per week for 36 weeks, the Sonlight 50 States Unit Study is a great way to incorporate state history into your homeschool.
Side note: If you’d rather complete this unit study in less time, you could easily adapt this program to a half year study by doubling up… just watch out for the busier lessons and longer projects.
Either way, this is one of the best programs I have seen for state history! I know that even once we are done working on our state’s history with this Sonlight Unit Study, we will still be utilizing the beautiful book and digging into the history of some of the other amazing US States.
