As we wrap up our 10-day series dedicated to helping you navigate how to make homeschooling simple, I thought I’d end with the one thing I wish I had known as a brand-new homeschooler. One thing that would have changed the trajectory for our little family (but left me with far fewer stories to share with you).
The one thing that transformed our homeschool and allowed us to embrace this lifestyle and find our groove.
The key to simple homeschooling.

The One Thing That Transformed My Homeschool
I know, I should hold this off until the end, but if you agree to keep reading, I’ll agree to share the one tool to simple homeschooling right here at the top.
This is one thing that I wish I had known more than a decade ago when we decided to withdraw our two elementary students from the public school, and, along with our toddler and an infant, embrace a life that was so very different than what we knew.
Believe it or not, it’s simple this: Let go of unrealistic expectations.
Thatโs it. Thatโs the thing that changed everything in our homeschool. When I stopped chasing the perfect schedule, the picture-perfect curriculum lineup, and the idea that we had to “keep up” with what everyone else was doing, I finally found peace.
And not just peace for me, but for my kids, too.
Comparison Was Stealing Our Joy
For too long, I had been looking sideways, comparing our homeschool.
I saw polished Instagram reels, picture-perfect book stacks, and beautifully themed unit studies, and I thought that was what successful homeschooling had to look like.
Only we didn’t look anything like that. We had daily melt-downs from frustration or confusion (sometimes both), a messy house, and nowhere was the picture-perfect, happy homeschool family I had been promised.
But here’s the hard truth: comparison is a liar. Itโs also exhausting.
Letting go of those outside expectations gave me space to create something better: a homeschool that worked for us, one that felt natural, flexible, and was simple.
Yes, The Key To Simple Homeschooling Was Simplifying Our Days
Once I stopped chasing someone elseโs vision, I was finally able to ask the most important question:
What actually works for our family?
Turns out, the answer was simplicity. Embracing a less-is-more mindset. Ditching the standards and pressure to keep up.
We learned how to homeschool with less, realizing that yes, we could do just 3 subjects a day in homeschool, especially with a simple homeschool rhythm and utilizing homeschool looping.
And we learned that these changes would bring us success as we opened the door to a whole new approach to homeschooling, one that I’ve shared with you throughout this 10-day series on simple homeschooling.
Letโs recap a few highlights:

Simple Homeschooling For A More Peaceful Home
The biggest transformation in our homeschool didnโt come from a shiny new curriculum or a perfectly color-coded schedule. It came when I finally gave myself permission to stop trying to do it all and instead focus on what truly mattered to our family.
That shift began with a hard look at our values, goals, and what we actually wanted home education to look and feel like. It meant letting go of unrealistic expectations and building a homeschool around our vision, not someone elseโs.
I also started paying closer attention to who I followed and learned from. I sought out voices and mentors whose values aligned with ours and filled my shelves (and heart) with books that encouraged and equipped me as a homeschool mom.
Eventually, that growth led me to share our story with other homeschool familiesโfamilies like yoursโso you, too, can find freedom, focus, and simplicity in your homeschool journey.
So, friend, if youโre feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or just a little lost, start by asking yourself these 3 questions:
- What’s working well in our homeschool?
- What’s not working?
- What can we let go of?
And then? Let it go.
Friend, before the next school year starts, make space for simplicity. Make space for joy. And make space for the kind of homeschool that fits you and your wonderful family.
Youโve got this! ๐
Happy homeschooling, friend!

Oh, so very true! One thing I learned is that the public school parents don’t really have it any easier. Once you factor in all the things they face rather than just looking on the surface (especially on those hard days when we KNOW how hard homeschooling is and handing it off seems so tempting!) not only do they have it harder than it seems–someone else is raising their kids. SO worth it to raise one’s own kiddos!
I tend to agree, Cindi! And, truthfully, I think that public school parents may have it harder since there’s more of a desire to fit in and more pressure to keep up. We started out in the public school and that is one aspect I do not miss at all.
Thanks for reading, friend!
