Spreading Joy: The Heart of Serving Others at Christmas
- Spreading Joy: The Heart of Serving Others at Christmas
Inside: The third post in our Homeschooling Through The Holidays series, guest author Kerry from How To Homeschool My Child is helping you create a fun Christmas tradition to get your kids excited about serving others.
Christmas is the perfect season to teach kids the joy of serving others. When my kids were homeschooling, we used a fun Christmas service idea to focus on others. In fact, this service project is still my kids favorite Christmas memory. What is it?
My kids sold pumpkin bread and bought Christmas gifts for an overseas missionary family.
As homeschool moms, we have the opportunity to weave serving others into both education and family traditions. These projects can help our children grow in empathy, generosity, and Christlike love, keeping Christ the focus of Christmas.

How We Turned Pumpkin Bread into Serving Others
Each year, we sold pumpkin bread to raise money for a specific missionary family. I reached out to the missionary mom to ask what gifts their children would appreciate but couldnโt afford. Those gifts were our goal.
My kids didnโt just watch me do the workโthey actively participated. They took orders, baked the bread, delivered the loaves, calculated expenses, and even figured out shipping costs to places like Africa and Europe. Think: Math & Science lessons during the holidays. Tying Christmas into your homeschool can stop your stress, homeschool mom.
To fund the gifts, my kids baked small loaves of pumpkin bread and chocolate chip cookies. They took orders from friends, family, and church members in November and December. After paying me for the ingredients, the remaining money went toward purchasing gifts and shipping them overseas.
This was back in the day, before buying online. We headed to the store and the kids picked out which gifts they wanted to send. We came back home and wrapped the gifts, preparing them to ship overseas.
This was more than just a baking projectโit was a practical homeschool lesson. My kids learned budgeting, goal-setting, and logistics. They even calculated shipping costs as part of their math curriculum, turning the entire process into an educational homeschool lesson.
The Ripple Effect of Serving Others
Each year, the gifts varied depending on the familyโs needs. One year, we sent educational games; another year, dress-up clothes. Sometimes, the missionary family would even suggest using the money to help a neighboring family in need. These experiences gave my kids a bigger picture of what it means to serve others.
Looking back, this tradition had a lasting impact. When my daughter, Gentry, had to take something that represented her favorite Christmas memory, she baked pumpkin bread. What you don’t know is she does not like pumpkin bread. However, our pumpkin bread mission activity is still her favorite tradition, even in her thirties.
Thatโs the spirit of Christmas. It isnโt just the Bible story. Itโs the Bible in action.
How can your family show the love of Jesus this year? Who in your community or church could use a tangible reminder of Godโs unconditional love?
Start by making a list of families in need. Choose one, and let your kids take the lead in earning money or creating gifts for them. This simple act of kindness can teach them more about love, humility, and generosity than any lesson from a textbook.

Make Serving Others a Family Tradition
Homeschooling offers the perfect setting to integrate service into your Christmas celebrations. By creating opportunities for your kids to give back, youโre helping them develop a heart for others. This year, letโs inspire our children to see Christmas not just as a season of receiving, but as a season of givingโand living out the love of Christ.
