Inside: Thinking about homeschooling but feeling overwhelmed? Learn the five simple steps you need to start homeschooling with confidence—today or anytime.

If you’re thinking it’s time to start homeschooling, whether that’s today, tomorrow, or sometime soon, there’s a good chance you’re feeling overwhelmed. And let me say this right up front: that’s completely normal.

Maybe you have littles at home and can’t imagine putting them on a bus.
Maybe your child isn’t thriving where they are.
Maybe January is approaching, and something in your heart is whispering, now is the time.

I’ve been there. I remember sitting at my computer, typing “how to homeschool” into the search bar over and over… reading, scrolling, researching until everything blurred together. Everyone else made it look easy… but to me, it felt complicated, intimidating, and foreign.

If that’s you right now, take a deep breath, friend. You’re not behind. You’re not failing. You’re just at the beginning.

And that’s exactly where this post is meant to meet you.

The Myth That Keeps New Homeschoolers Stuck

Many prospective homeschoolers find themselves stuck. They are deep in the research mode, convinced they have to figure out everything before they start homeschooling.

This means that they are also stuck in the details as they worry about:

  • Finding the perfect curriculum
  • Created a detailed daily schedule
  • Crafting a beautifully organized homeschool space.

How do I know? Friend, I once believed that, too. I even made a laminated schedule once (type-A moms, I see you 😅).

But here’s the truth: that mindset actually keeps you stuck.

The reality is that homeschooling is a lot like parenting, friend. You learn as you go. You adapt. You adjust. You grow alongside your kids. You do not need a perfect plan to get started homeschooling.

What you need is clarity, confidence, and permission to keep things simple.

That’s where these five simple steps to start homeschooling come into play.

Step 1: Know Your Homeschool Laws

Before you start homeschooling, you need to understand the laws that govern home education where you live.

Some states have detailed reporting requirements. Others are very relaxed. And many fall somewhere in between.

I’m not a lawyer (and I don’t pretend to be one), but I will always encourage you to stay legal and follow the laws that govern homeschooling where you live. A fantastic resource for this is Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). They clearly outline homeschool laws for all 50 states and can help you understand things like:

  • Do you need to file a letter of intent (and how to submit it)?
  • How can you withdraw your child from school mid-year?
  • What deadlines matter right now?

This step doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Look for quick answers, not perfection.

And if you are confused, try to find a local homeschool group, co-op, or an umbrella school to help you understand. Local homeschoolers can often be your best source of knowledge on how to homeschool in your area.

Step 2: Know Your Why

The next step in the five simple steps to start homeschooling is to know your why. Why are you homeschooling? Why are you choosing this path? What is your motivation for pursuing home education?

Common reasons that families choose to homeschool include:

  • You want more time with your kids
  • You want a faith-based education
  • Your child is struggling socially or academically
  • You just know this is the right choice.

All of these are valid reasons, friend, and they are an important part of the process of starting to homeschool.

So right now, while you are thinking about it, write down your why. Jot it down and keep it safe. Put it somewhere you can dig it out and re-read it.

Why? Simply put, it’s because while homeschooling is absolutely worth it, there will be hard days, and your “why” will steady you when they come. 😉

Here’s another little secret: your “why” will change. The reason you start homeschooling may not be the reason you’re still homeschooling five years from now, and that’s okay.

Write your why down. Revisit it when necessary. Let it grow with you and your homeschool.

Step 3: Understand Your Family Dynamics

Every homeschool looks different because every family is different. So while Pinterest, Instagram, and your favorite homeschool blogs make it look like we are all doing the same thing, we aren’t.

Sure, we are all homeschooling – but how we do that varies widely because our homes, schedules, needs, and educational pursuits all look different.

So while you are getting started as a homeschool family, ask yourself:

  • Is your home busy or quiet?
  • Do you have introverts, extroverts, or both?
  • Does someone work an unusual schedule?
  • Are there learning differences, medical needs, or life circumstances to consider?

These aren’t obstacles to homeschooling, friend. They are information that will help you plan accordingly. Homeschooling is flexible by design, and learning how your family functions helps you build something sustainable.

Step 4: Learn About Homeschooling (One Step at a Time)

This one you are already doing right now, and it’s going to take some time.

Spoiler alert: You won’t learn everything about how to homeschool in one video, one post, or one day. Learning how to homeschool is a lifelong learning journey for parents, too.

Take this step slowly. Follow trusted voices. Learn what aligns with your family. Release what doesn’t. And realize that just about the time you feel confident in what you are doing, a new hiccup will come along to keep you humble. 😉

This is a marathon, friend, not a race. Slow and steady wins this one.

Step 5: Choose a Start Date

This is my favorite step.

Choose a start date… and don’t make it too far away.

Excitement fades when we wait too long. You don’t need a long runway, just forward motion. Whether that’s tomorrow, next week, or very soon, commit to starting your homeschool while you are excited and motivated.

Because you don’t need perfection, friend.
Just momentum and the courage to learn as you go.
