Ok, friend, you know I’m a summer girl at heart. But even I’ll admit fall is one of the best times to sneak a little extra hands-on learning into our homeschool.

There is just SO much to explore with the season!

Leaves are changing colors. Apples are everywhere. Pumpkins are growing, seeds are falling, and the world outside our window seems to change a little more every day.

And that makes fall the perfect time to add a few simple science experiments to your homeschool.

Because here’s the thing: I like hands-on learning, but I don’t particularly like complicated science experiments. 😅

If an experiment requires 14 obscure ingredients, an hour of prep, and another hour to clean up afterward, there’s a pretty good chance we’re skipping it.

Thankfully, seasonal science doesn’t have to be complicated. These easy fall science experiments use simple supplies and the things you’re probably already seeing around you this season.

Why Fall Science Experiments Are a Homeschool Win

Here’s the thing about this time of year: nature is basically doing the lesson planning for you (if you care to pay attention and get outside).

Changing leaves, ripening apples, pumpkin patches everywhere you look… one thing veteran homeschoolers know is that fall hands you an amazing science curriculum on a silver platter, and all you have to do is bring the curiosity (and maybe a few coffee filters).

These experiments work beautifully on their own, but they also pair perfectly with a fall unit study. If you’ve got kiddos who love learning by doing, building a week or two around these fall science experiments is a wonderful way to make autumn learning stick.

7 Easy Fall Science Experiments to Try This Season

No lab coats required, friend, or a lengthy list of specialized supplies or equipment.

These fall science experiments use just a few common supplies from your kitchen and backyard, so you can jump right in without a lot of extra planning or prep.

Please note: Always supervise your children when they are conducting science experiments, especially when using heat, chemicals, or other potentially hazardous materials.

Leaf Chromatography

This one is pure magic, and it’s my favorite of all the fall science experiments on this list.

Crush a few colorful leaves and drop them into a jar with a splash of rubbing alcohol. Let it sit, then dip a strip of coffee filter into the liquid. As the alcohol travels up the paper, it pulls the pigments along with it, revealing colors your kids may not have known were tucked inside a single leaf.

It’s a fantastic way to explore the pigments inside leaves and talk about why leaves change color in the fall. According to the U.S. Forest Service, as chlorophyll breaks down, other pigments become visible, creating many of the colors we associate with autumn.

Apple Oxidation Race

Grab an apple, slice it into several pieces, and let your kids run their own little experiment. Leave one slice plain, dunk another in lemon juice, dunk a third in salt water, and set them side by side.

Which one browns first? Which one stays freshest the longest?

This experiment introduces the concept of enzymatic browning in a way that finally makes sense. Let’s Talk Science breaks down the chemistry nicely if you want to go a little deeper with older kids. Pumpkin Sink or Float

Before you carve it, science it.

Fill up a bin or bathtub with water and let your kids guess whether a whole pumpkin will sink or float. Then test it! Once you have your answer, talk about why the pumpkin sank or floated and introduce concepts like density and buoyancy.

Bonus points if you repeat the test with a pumpkin that’s been gutted versus one still full of seeds and pulp.

No pumpkin? No problem! You can use any round gourd for this experiment.

Walking Water in Fall Colors

You’ve probably seen the classic rainbow version of this one, but give it an autumn twist. Set out three or four cups of water tinted red, orange, and yellow, alternating with empty cups in between, and connect them with folded paper towels.

Over the next hour, watch as the colored water “walks” from cup to cup, blending into new shades along the way. It’s a simple, low-mess way to explore capillary action while adding in a little color theory too.

Static Electricity Leaf Push

Here’s a quiet-time favorite for wiggly learners. Tear paper into tiny leaf shapes, rub a balloon on a wool sweater or your child’s hair, and hold it just above the scraps.

THen, watch them jump.

It’s a simple, giggle-inducing way to explore static electricity, and it ties in beautifully if you’re studying weather or seasonal changes as part of a broader science block.

We experimented with static electricity using balloons and sticking them to the ceiling when we worked through Big Bible Science.

Pumpkin Seed Investigation

Before you toss all that pumpkin goop into the compost, turn it into a simple science (and math!) lesson.

Start by having your kids estimate how many seeds they think are inside the pumpkin. Then scoop them out, separate the seeds from the pulp, and count them to see how close you were.

If you have more than one pumpkin, take the experiment a little further. Does a bigger pumpkin have more seeds? What about a heavier pumpkin? Compare the number of seeds in different pumpkins and see if your predictions were correct.

You can also take a closer look at the seeds themselves. Cut one open, examine the inside, talk about what a seed needs to grow, or save a few for further investigation.

Bonus: Don’t throw the seeds away when you’re finished! Roast them for an easy fall snack.

Rinse the pumpkin seeds and remove as much pulp as possible. Pat them dry, then toss them with a small amount of melted butter or oil and a sprinkle of salt. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast at 350°F for about 12–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly golden and crisp. Let them cool before eating.

Pumpkin Volcano

Yes, it’s a classic. But it earns its spot every single year.

Hollow out a small pumpkin, spoon in some baking soda, and pour in vinegar tinted with orange or red food coloring. Stand back and let the eruption do the talking.

It’s a simple way to demonstrate a chemical reaction between an acid and a base, which releases carbon dioxide gas and is always a family favorite!

Tips for Fall Science Success in Your Homeschool

  • Ask for a hypothesis before you begin. Before starting an experiment, ask your kids what they think will happen and why.
  • Keep a nature journal handy so kids can sketch or record what they notice.
  • Do experiments outside whenever you can. Fewer messes, more fresh air.
  • Don’t rush the process. Science rewards experimentation and patience over speed.
