Homeschool Science For The Non-Scientific Homeschool Mama

It’s no secret that in my home, science is a struggle.

Well, for me anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‰

While I love all things math, language arts, and history, science and I have never seemed to bond in the way that atoms can… and this leaves me squirming when it comes to teaching science.

My children, on the other hand, all happen to love science!

The boys are drawn to all things space and physics and movements.

One daughter loves the study of anatomy and the human body.

And the other, she loves that she can “do” science and is all about getting out her safety goggles so she can work on combining elements, making potions, or seeing what will grow from her latest creations.

So not only do I need to make sure we cover science in our homeschool, I need to make sure that I cover homeschool science in a way that encourages their curiosity and fuels their respective passions.

And BookShark looks like just the homeschool science program to help with that.

BookShark Homeschool Science

When our BookShark homeschool science materials first arrived, I had to keep my daughter away from the boxes. She was excited and ready to dig in, but I knew I needed a few moments to get organized and wrap my mind around a program that contained such a wide variety of resources.

She waited about as patiently as a seven-year-old can and then we dug into this homeschool science curriculum.

And we quickly found out why so many people love BookShark!

BookShark Is Literature-Based Learning

Even before this review opportunity popped into my lap, BookShark has been a program that has been on my radar for a few years now.

Simply put, I have been slowly transitioning our homeschool to a much more literature-based homeschool and I loved that BookShark uses a wide variety of books in their program.

Armed with 8 books, my daughter and I began on page 1 and started a quest to learn more about our world starting with The Usborne Children’s Encyclopedia.

Each day we would read just a page or two, and use the enclosed QR code to learn even more. The lessons themselves were simple, straightforward, and engaging for my daughter.

Often she asked to complete additional material because as much as she enjoyed the reading she really wanted to get to the last part of the lesson – the science experiment.

Even as a literature-based homeschool science option, BookShark knows that kids learn so much more when they can engage their whole body and not just read. They encourage this hands-on learning by including experiments and a majority of the supplies you will need in the Discover and Do Science Supply Kit.

A 4-Day Schedule, Perfect for Busy Homeschools!

I am a huge fan of the 4-day homeschool week for a variety of reasons.

Thankfully, BookShark homeschool science is as well. So not only do they offer a 4-day schedule, they have all 36-weeks of lessons planned out for you.

Since we worked on science only 2-days per week, we completed days 1 & 2 together, same with days 3 &4. Even doubling up, my daughter was more than happy to work on the reading, the activity worksheets, and the experiments.

BookShark Uses Levels Rather Than Grades

While I often refer to my children on the site by either their age or grades (rather than their names), I can tell you that none of them are “grade-level.”

Instead, the ebb and flow, working simply on the next level or learning the next skill because if there is one thing I learned early on in our homeschool it’s that grade levels are not quite as important as we like to think.

They also vary widely by product and company.

So when I saw the BookShark offers science with levels that cover a range of ages rather than grades, I was thrilled!

This means there is no need to feel rushed. No concept of being behind or ahead. And no stressing out parents or children who are still in that mindset.

It also means that if you have multiple children close in age, you can potentially have them use the same level from BookShark homeschool science (although you will need additional consumable resources.)

What Was In Our BookShark Science Kit?

Age-wise my daughter fit into two different levels. Level B is for children ages 6-8, where Level C is recommended for children ages 7-9.

However, as this was my daughter’s first official dip into science, we opted to go with Level B.

Our kit included 8 different books, Instructor’s Guide with a 36-week lesson plan, Science Experiment Book with Paper Packet, and the Discover and Do experiment supply kit.

Inside the Instructor’s Guide was everything I needed as a homeschool mom to make sure my daughter was loving her science lessons. The steps were all laid out for me walking me through step-by-step the books to read, the activity pages to complete, and even what supplies I would need to add to make sure the experiment could be completed.

Hands-On Science Doesn’t Get Any BETTER Than BookShark

Hands-on science truly doesn’t get any better than the BookShark homeschool science program.

My only regret? That we didn’t take the plunge and try out BookShark in our homeschool sooner.
