It’s no secret that we love to have fun with language arts in our homeschool. While I personally am a huge fan of diagraming sentences and memorizing grammatical rules, my kids are not and they prefer to learn their grammar, spelling, and Language Arts skills in a more authentic and natural way.

A method that we have worked hard to adapt and encourage over the years by surrounding ourselves with products, resources, and tools that give us the skills we need in the way we learn best.

What Is Night Zookeeper?

Night Zookeeper is an online learning program that works to teach Language Arts skills in a fun and engaging way.

Through a variety of lessons, games, and activities, your elementary-age child can work on spelling, vocabulary, parts of speech, punctuation, sentence structure, and creative writing all while being an animal keeper at the Night Zoo.

Not an app, the NightZookeeper.com language arts program works on web browsers (but the company does recommend Safari or Google Chrome), so you can use it across a wide variety of computers, tablets, and phones.

How Does Night Zookeeper Teach Homeschool Language Arts?

When you begin with Night Zookeeper, your child will be assigned their own login information. They will work to create an avatar and then jump right into the gameplay.

Lessons, which include video elements and games, are taught each week. For younger students, the focus is on capital letters, punctuation, and proper nouns.

Progressing up in age, students begin tackling more challenging concepts including synonyms, conjunctions, apostrophe rules, and compound words.

The oldest students will be able to work on writing with alliteration and figurative language, adjective and adverb usage, and identifying the difference between fact and opinion.

At each level, there are reading, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar skills that are taught, practiced, and reinforced in a low-key and fun way that engages the student through play and encourages continued writing.

In fact, it’s through creative writing that a majority of the lessons are taught. Younger students are able to do their writing by answering questions, where older students will be expected to write more and more.

It’s in this writing that all of the skills and lessons are put to use and reminders are given for assistance (for example, my daughter was reminded to add a period to the end of her sentence). Once the writing is completed, it is reviewed for the required elements and can be improved or submitted to a tutor.

Is Night Zookeeper a Full Language Arts Curriculum?

Night Zookeeper can be used as either a complete homeschool language arts curriculum on its own or as a supplement to your current program.

How can it be both?

Great question! And the answer lies in how you opt to use the features of Night Zookeeper.

If you opt for just 30-60 minutes per week of usage, then your Night Zookeeper subscription will be a supplement to your current program. It will be working to reinforce material already taught, helping to identify gaps and weak areas, and showing your child how fun and creative writing truly can be.

However, you can opt to use the program daily and use Night Zookeeper as your primary language arts program, supplementing it with quality literature and read-aloud stories that will help your child see how wonderful the written language can be.

Developed for students ages 6-12, you can easily use Night Zookeeper with students who are in grades 1 all the way up through the 8th – especially if your student needs a little extra help with writing skills.

The only caveat – it is best if your child has already started reading when you begin using Night Zookeeper.

However, the online learning program does have a read-to-me option that will aid in early readers being able to use it as well.
