5 Reasons We Love Grammar Galaxy (And Why You Should Too!)
Do you love your homeschool Language Arts program? No? Well then, let me tell you all about Grammar Galaxy and share just a few reasons why we love this fun and interactive program that is truly out of this world!
As a homeschool mom, creating a solid foundation for Language Arts skills is something that I find pivotal to our success. Being able to use language properly is a skill that I know will benefit my children well into their futures.
Traditional learning methods, however, don’t always allow for that to happen.
I am not a fan of curricula that are simply endless memorization of rules and fill-in-the-blank worksheets… and neither are my kids.
We prefer a more relaxed approach to our learning. One that is fun and engaging, while also educational.
Programs that encourage us to learn and look for learning opportunities rather than those that make my children want to hide when I tell them it’s time for school.
Luckily for us, I was introduced to such a program. A Language Arts curriculum that was innovative, creative, and engaging, perfect for my elementary-aged students.
And it didn’t take long for us to fall in love with Grammar Galaxy.

Why We Chose Grammar Galaxy
While I was looking for a program that would inspire my youngest students, Grammar Galaxy kept popping up.
As a program that promised to end Language Arts boredom, I was intrigued but skeptical. We had been burned before by programs that smothered us with harsh rules and rigid lessons.
Yet, I kept coming back. Kept thinking about a program that claimed it was fast, easy, and a fun way to teach Language Arts.
The more I read and researched, the more I knew that Grammar Galaxy was different.
And the more I saw that it was an amazing way to make homeschool Language Arts fun!
No more endless workbooks and worksheets. No more simple rule memorization. And no more learning things simply for the sake of learning them.
Instead, it was going to open up the world of grammar, teaching the rules and requirements in a way that made children not just understand why but be excited to learn.
We dove in, and we were not disappointed.
Grammar Galaxy lived up to the hype, and we quickly found ourselves fans of the program! Language Arts became a subject that my youngest son was excited to work on. Each day, he was ready for excitement, adventure, and plenty of grammar-mistake fighting as he worked to save Grammar Galaxy from the evil Gremlin.
In short, we quickly fell in love with Grammar Galaxy and its laid-back but solid approach to Language Arts.
5 Reasons We Love Grammar Galaxy
Five. It’s a good number, right? A solid list of valid reasons why we love Grammar Galaxy and why you should consider this program.
Unlike many of the curriculum options I promote on my site, this one is not a homeschool review… not in the traditional sense.
Grammar Galaxy is not a program we used for just a few short weeks, and then I tell you all about it.
It is a program that we use in our homeschool on a regular basis. It’s on the shelf with other programs and resources I selected for our learning. A staple in our home that we are looking forward to using for many years to come.
1. Grammar Galaxy is fun!
Chiche, I know, but it truly is. Regardless of the volume you choose, your child is thrust into an exciting world of grammar.
Grammar Galaxy is a story-based program where you and your children meet the King and Queen of English, along with the three English children, Kirk, Luke, and Ellen.
The 36-chapter storybook takes your children deep into Grammar Galaxy, where each week the Gremlin attempts to tamper with the English language. This sets the stage for the problem your child will be learning to fix.

Whether you are sorting fiction from non-fiction, fixing a problem in Synonym City, or locating the missing pronouns, each week you are reading a chapter and learning about a new grammar problem.
In most chapters of the text, the problem is obvious right off the bat to parents. This is because the problem is woven right into the story. Just like waiting for your child to figure out what is happening in your favorite story, waiting for your child to pick up on the error (even if they don’t fully understand why it’s wrong) adds to the fun. They are part detective and part additional character in the story (more on that later!).
2. It’s super easy (for you and your child)!
The first thing you do each week is read a chapter from the text. These chapters typically only take a few minutes, and they set the stage for this week’s problem area. There is no parental prep work needed – just open the text and read that week’s lesson. Contained within the chapters are vocabulary words, allowing you to work on reading, comprehension, and vocabulary skills in one program.
Each chapter includes the reasoning needed for the problem you are working on. Right there, in a box, within the chapter. Easy-to-use explanations of how to fix the grammar error, written so your child can easily understand them. This reasoning is also discussed by the characters in the story, giving your child multiple opportunities to understand each rule.
After you read your weekly text, there are activities that focus on learning the concept and reviewing previous ones. These lessons are part of your child’s mission and are designed to be used by even those children who aren’t yet ready for a lot of writing. In fact, the program recommends completing most of the lessons using markers or highlighters, which are easier to use for little hands. This also allows your child to focus on learning the grammar lesson rather than worrying if their writing is messy or dealing with hand cramps.
The pages are simple, straightforward, and just like the text, require no upfront planning from you. Just open and go.
3. Grammar Galaxy was created by a homeschool Mom!
Yes, Dr. Melanie Wilson is a homeschool mom to 6 kids with more than 17 years of homeschooling experience. This experience means she gets it!
She gets that homeschoolers need quality products that actually teach our kids – not just more worksheets to fill out.
She understands that we need curricula options that are designed with homeschool students and parents in mind.
And she knows what it’s like to watch your child struggle with a curriculum that is designed with a public school mindset and only frustrates homeschool students and parents alike.
Most importantly, though, you can tell from using the program that she fully understands that our children don’t need hours upon hours of lessons and needless repetition.
Yes, we need to work and rework some lessons. Yes, we need to give our children multiple opportunities to try new concepts. And yes, we even need to review the basics once in a while.
But what we don’t need are programs that require hours of parental setup beforehand and large chunks of our students’ day.
Designed to work with elementary-level students, most days Grammar Galaxy will only take you about 10-minutes. The curriculum is open-and-go and truly created with your young student in mind.
4. It’s the perfect mix of spiral learning and mastery!
While the text is broken up into 36 lessons, the program is divided into units. These units focus on different aspects of grammar skills.
The lesson of each unit builds on the previous lessons, and the units build on each other. At the end of each unit is a cumulative review that gives you the opportunity to check for mastery of skills learned. These multiple-choice question reviews are quick and simple, and the answers are included.
If, for some reason, your Guardian is unsuccessful with the review, you simply take a couple of days to review the concepts and lessons and take the second review. No pressure, no stress.
5. Grammar Galaxy is Interactive!
As I promised in the first reason, your child is actually an important part of the Grammar Galaxy story.
Written in as an additional character, your child is given a mission each week from the three English children. This mission goes out to all guardians of Grammar Galaxy. They then spend the next 2-4 days working in the mission manual, learning the skills to correct the errors in the Grammar Galaxy.
I say 2-4 because, honestly, my son enjoyed these activities so much that we typically completed more than one lesson per day!
At the end of the week, your child reads the mission update. This update lets them know how the other guardians fared on the quest to save Grammar Galaxy and thanks them for their help.
By writing them into the story, they are encouraged to learn. They are driven to understand the grammar lesson of the week to help protect Grammar Galaxy and fix the errors the Gremlin makes. When children feel that their work is helpful, when they feel like they are part of something, they are more inclined to want to learn and help.
By creating an interactive Language Arts program, Grammar Galaxy helps to show kids how their grammar skills and their ability to learn new grammar skills can help save Grammar Galaxy.
Who Is Grammar Galaxy Designed For?
Grammar Galaxy is designed for students who have begun reading and writing, even if they are in the early stages. Students who are eager to learn, but don’t necessarily want to spend a ton of time doing worksheets at a desk.
It’s for parents who want to make sure their children have a solid foundation of Language Arts skills. And parents who want a curriculum that allows them to cover reading and comprehension skills, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, parts-of-speech, and literary concepts all in one place with one program.
Basically, it’s designed for you.
Which Volume Is Right For Us?
Currently, there are six volumes of Grammar Galaxy covering all of elementary Language Arts. Being written in volumes rather than grades allows you to choose the level that fits your child’s specific needs.
If they have no prior Language Arts experience, Nebula is the way to go. This program covers the basics. Each additional level builds from there. You can easily start in whichever volume is right for your child.
Not sure where to start? You can check out samples or take a placement test to place your child in the correct level.
Print vs Digital?
Grammar Galaxy is available in both print and digital versions. Each delivery method will give you the exact same Grammar Galaxy program you love.
For our home, we chose digital for a couple of reasons.
One, it is a little cheaper than the print. Plus, I can print as many copies as I need for my own household (no sharing with the neighbors). This means if we really mess up a lesson, I can just print another copy. Or if the cumulative test shows we need a review, I can reprint as well.
The biggest reason though, was that we could create our own binder and combine both the text and the missions. A word of caution, though – buy a bigger binder! In our first year, we used a 1-inch binder, and it was not big enough. Go with the 2-inch. ๐
However, if you want to save on buying a binder, ink and paper, and the process of printing and customizing your binder, you can grab the printed copy and get a free erasable highlighter and bookmark as well. Oh, and shipping is free to most locations worldwide!
There Really Are More Than 5 Reasons We Love Grammar Galaxy
There truly are more than 5 reasons we love Grammar Galaxy, but five seemed like a good number for this post.
For us, Grammar Galaxy was everything I was looking for in an elementary-level Language Arts program.
Building a good, solid foundation for my son is super important to me. Making sure we keep Language Arts fun is just as important.
I have worked hard over the last few years to find programs that teach my children in a way that helps them not only to learn, but also want to learn. Programs that encourage them to grow, explore, and ask questions.
For too long we went with programs that weren’t a good fit. I taught them, in the same way I was taught as a public school student, and the results weren’t good. By finding programs like Grammar Galaxy, I have been able to transform not just my homeschool but my children as well.
My son is excited to work on Grammar Galaxy. He is excited to learn the built-in vocabulary words and find them in the world, like in his favorite movies. He loves curling up on the couch for our weekly text reading – it’s way better than sitting at a desk. And he truly enjoys that his Language Arts lessons are completed in just a few minutes each day – even when we do more than we are “supposed to.”
And as a homeschool parent, I love that he is learning in a way that is fun, easy, and natural. I couldn’t ask for more.
