Don’t Try To Do It All
When your kids are young you may be looking to bring family traditions from when you were growing up into your family’s lives, or looking to create your own. This can be very stressful and hard for both parents and kids. Instead of trying to do everything that you would like to do, choose a few activities to make the most of.
Take the time to think over your list and choose a few that you think your family would truly enjoy. You can always mix things up next year until you find the perfect holiday traditions that your family will fall in love with and will keep Christ the center of your Christmas. When doing activities with younger kids such as preschoolers choose ones that are quick yet will hold interest for some time.
Make Christmas the Focus of Your Homeschool
One of the best pieces of advice I received the first year I homeschooled was to take a break during December. A friend of mine who had kids the same ages, but had homeschooled since Kindergarten, told me she “quits” formal homeschooling. I wish I had a Christmas Unit Study to help me, but I didn’t.
What you might say? Quit homeschooling for a month.
Well, not really!
From this piece of advice, our family began a Christmas tradition of integrating Christmas and Advent into our homeschooling. These may include:
- Reading books with an Advent or Christmas theme (Language Arts)
- Learning math through baking (Math & Science)
- Selling baked goods to earn money for missionary gifts (Math, Science & Business)
- Studying the history of special Advent days from history (History)

Prioritize Family Time while Making Everything Work
The holidays are busy and it’s nearly impossible to get everything done throughout the season. Instead of stressing out to do it all, you can focus on family time and building relationships. Focus on your family rather than schooling. Every part of the day can be a learning opportunity. Even better, every part of the day can be part of your child’s happiest memories as they grow older.
Look for fun opportunities to go out as a family. This might include looking at holiday lights or even visiting local events like zoo walks for a fun Christmas field trip. Spend more quality time as a family reading stories and watching Christmas movies. No one ever regrets doing less paperwork during the holidays.

Our family still has fond memories of reading Jotham’s Journey several years in a row. All of us put this book on our top 10 books from our homeschooling years.
Remember that we do not have to have the perfect holiday or have the time to fit in your normal coursework. It’s the perfectly imperfect moments that lend themselves both to wonderful memories and learning that stick.
