Make A Joyful Noise

I don’t know about you, but at my church, we have a lot of singers. A lot of people who enjoy reading Psalms and poems. And a lot of people who love to get up and share their stories of salvation, grace, and triumph. Which is pretty amazing since Psalm 100 is all about making a joyful noise unto the Lord.

Singspiration

We have so many people who love to share that the church decided to give them the opportunity to do so. We created what we call a “Singspiration”. Held on the 5th Sunday of the month, it’s a time when our normal morning worship service is transferred. The Pastor doesn’t preach. The song leader only picks one song. And all those who spent the past few weeks signing up get a chance to share.

And people do. It’s mostly songs, but they run the gamut. From southern gospel to contemporary, songs about faith, strength, and salvation are enjoyed by all. Young and old alike perform and uplift all those who will not only listen with their ears but their hearts as well.

It’s pretty amazing. Sitting there today I saw people try new songs. I saw new people get up and try… because even if it’s about serving and worshiping, it’s still terrifying to get up there in front of the crowd! I heard some sing along with the artist, some who tried karaoke, and some who played their own instruments.

Throughout all this singing though there was one constant – Jesus is Lord. He saves, He forgives, He helps, and He heals. All of the songs lit up the sanctuary proclaiming the truth of the Gospel and reminding us all that we serve a mighty God.

More Than Just Songs

There were more than songs though, which is always nice. A couple of people brought readings. I really enjoy readings, whether they are Psalms or poetry, or a person just reads the words in a hymn. Readings, just like songs, offer the participant a chance to share what’s on their heart. It’s just as personal and just as nerve-wracking as singing. There is still time spent preparing and being ready to go. It’s still an opportunity to reach the people sitting in the pews and listening. And still a chance to make that joyful noise.

Afterward, we always have a gathering. Often we do a good old fashioned potluck chuck full of crockpots and casseroles. Today, however, we changed it up and had an ice cream social. A time to gather with friends around tables and just be. Enjoy a snack, let the kids play, and fellowship with one another. It’s a nice change of pace too. People who normally rush out the door on a Sunday morning spend a few minutes enjoying some company. Those who may not know who to talk to, are able to find common ground around a song that was sung, a reading that was recited, or simply the food they are enjoying.

Make A Joyful Noise

For me, I love the Singspirations that we do. I sit in my pew and sing along with the person up front. I listen to the words and the music and try to hear the message they are sharing. Music has a way of touching the soul that is unique and different than a typical service. Music inspires and motivates a willing heart. It heals and strengthens a broken heart.

These events are a wonderful opportunity to hear what is on the hearts and minds of those willing to share. There is an energy in the air that is contagious as we all come to gather to worship and serve in unison. It’s a unique chance to come together in song and praise and unison. And for me, I am re-energized in a way that is both refreshing and inspiring.
