It is the most wonderful time of the year. But with all the activities at Christmas, it can feel like your to do list is just extra chaos, and anything but a silent night. The most wonderful time of the year becomes the busiest time of the year.

There are times when I dream of the carefree, blissful childhood days. But we are the ones that need to make Christmas time carefree and magical. This is just one of our roles as moms.

As homeschool moms, we are home with kids, so it is up to us to make this time of year magical. Yes, we want to make memories with our kids and create traditions they will pass on to their kids. It can be a lot though.

There are so many extras that come with the holidays. And it isn’t like the holiday season magically produces more time for these extras. We are adding all of these extras to our already busy schedules. Which then leads to feelings of overwhelm and stress during the holidays, and that robs us of the joy of the season.

This Christmas season, let’s change the busyness and the overwhelm and pursue making memories with our kids and embrace the joys of the season.

We are homeschool moms, and that means we have the freedom to homeschool through the holidays on our terms. And that could mean ditching the curriculum for fun activities at Christmas that still count as homeschool.

Christmas Holiday Activities Instead of Curriculum

Yes, you can totally pause your curriculum and replace it with holiday activities. Or you can do just Christmas time activities on one of the days and keep working on your curriculum the other days of the week.

If you live in a state that requires a certain number of days per year, then you might not be able to take a break for the entire holiday season. But you can adjust what you do at Christmas time. You can create a more relaxed time of homeschooling through the holidays.

Instead of focusing on the curriculum for the season, take some time to replace it with one of these activities that still count as homeschooling.

Christmas Reading By The Tree

This is my favorite. Take a day, get cozy in Christmas pjs, and read by the Christmas tree. There are so many holiday books for all ages, there really is something for everyone.

Add some hot chocolate and enjoy your time together.

Donations To A Local Charity

The holiday season is about giving. There are probably a lot of local charities in your area that you can give to.

For example, our local children’s hospital has requested donations of tie-blankets. These are easy to make, and almost any age group can take part in making them.

Christmas Coloring and Painting

Christmas coloring and painting are a great way to take the stress out of the holiday season and celebrate it, while creating traditions that will last for years.

We have a tradition of getting ceramic ornaments so the kids can paint them every year.

Ice Skating In The Park

This is such a great holiday activity. You will feel like you are in your own Hallmark movie.

You don’t even need to be an expert at ice skating. There is so much laughter and memories to be made from watching all the falls and the barely standing ups.

Christmas Around The World

Learn about how other cultures celebrate Christmas around the world. Have your kids pick a country to learn about, then present it to the rest of the family.

If you really want to get into it, you can even bake a Christmas dish from that country as well.

Baking, Baking, and More Baking

Speaking of baking. This is a great way to get the whole family involved—from the littlest to the biggest—everyone can participate. And the rewards are so sweet!

My five-year-old daughter asks to make Christmas cookies at least once per month. It doesn’t matter if it is March or August. It was such an important memory for her that she wants to repeat it.

Christmas Lights At The Zoo

This is fun for the whole family. If your zoo does Christmas lights. It is so much fun. And the best part is you get to see all the nocturnal animals out and about.

The Science of Snow

I am always fascinated by snow. I love how it blankets everything, and each snowflake is unique in design.

If you want to get very sciency with it, discuss freezing and melting points, the water cycle, or states of matter. If you have a microscope, look at snow under it (or find the videos on YouTube).

Literature and a Movie

Yes, this is my favorite one. Read a book together, like The Best Christmas Pageant, then watch the movie. Get fancy popcorn, warm pjs, and have a movie party.

Compare and contrast the book and the movie.

Christmas Market

If your town has a Christmas market, then go check it out. It is a great way to observe unique art and talk with the local artists.
