I don’t know about you, but there was a time when our holiday homeschooling looked a bit too formal, rigid, and even downright harsh.

The kids and I all worked diligently to follow the schedule I loving created months earlier, yet failed to leave room for wonder, excitement, or even baking Christmas cookies.

As a new homeschool mom, I failed to plan for the unplannable and our December homeschooling suffered as a result.

So when I say that I want to help you avoid that, I truly mean it.

Why Homeschooling Through The Holidays?

Remember above when I told you how I “Grinched” our way through those early holiday seasons, stealing joy with every new assignment and a perfectly laminated schedule?

Well, just like the beloved green Who, my heart, too, grew as I learned the lessons and found the balance.

My heart changed as I saw holiday homeschooling for what it was – a fantastic opportunity to allow the holidays to take center stage and memories to be the priority.

Over the years, we have tried many different approaches to homeschooling through the holidays and from them, developed our own unique approach to learning during the holiday season (like so much of our homeschooling is).

We spend more time in December baking cookies, watching movies, reading seasonal stories, and even, digging deep into interest-based learning.

We cover math and history, science and Language Arts in different ways, knowing that our favorite programs and resources will still be there come January.

And all the while, we check the boxes for both required learning and the ever-favorable relaxed learning style that takes our homeschooling out of the books and into life.

One thing we don’t do? Shorten our holiday break! We all love taking 2 and sometimes even 3 full weeks off to truly recharge and relax before we begin winter homeschooling in January.
